Here at Fur & Fangs we talk a lot about hunting coyotes. It’s our passion. We aim to inform and entertain sportsmen. That said, we generally don’t have too many stories on the good coyotes can and do offer. Well, today is different. We love coyotes, and not because we hunt them. Because they protect our expensive toys (boats) from sea lions!
In one of the more bizarre stories we’ve seen, the city of Newport Beach, California has begun to employ coyote decoys to ward off sea lions at local marinas. Who knew sea lions were a problem? OK, if you’re rich and live on the west coast you might have known.
The sea lions like to bask and play in the sun. They will find any place they can wiggle onto to enjoy their time in the sun. Boats and docks suffer a lot of damage because of this behavior. It’s so prevalent that the city has rules in place that require boat owners to keep the animals off their boats.
Harbormaster Dennis Dugan realized more needed to be done to protect property and he invested in eight coyote decoys to ward off the unruly intruders. Dugan heard about the idea from a nearby yacht club.
No word on whether the decoy coyotes are working yet but officials are hopeful.
So, there you have it. The good side of coyotes; if you own a boat and sea lions are near, they’ll help keep them away.
